One of Firefox’s biggest draws is its focus on privacy. However, the browser never seemed to have nailed down managing multiple digital identities. Your best bet was to use an extension, another browser profile, or separate private browsing sessions.
Firefox 153 has natively resolved this long-standing problem by building container tabs directly into the browser. I tested it out, and instead of juggling browser profiles or constantly signing in and out, you can now keep separate accounts isolated in the same browser window.
Two logins, one browser, zero conflicts
The everyday problem containers solve
Right now, I have two Google accounts running within the same window. Neither conflicts with the other for control. The best way I achieved this in the past was by using separate browsers or the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension. Constantly signing in and out of accounts also works, but that’s too stressful and impractical.
Under the hood, this is what Firefox Containers do. Firefox gives each container its own cookies and site storage, so websites can’t automatically share login sessions or other stored data between them. You can shop on Amazon in one container while logged into your bank account in another, without any of the sites sharing the other’s session data.
This is not new technology for Firefox. Firefox Multi-Account Containers has existed for several years. However, in July 2026, one key element changed: Mozilla built this feature directly into the browser; no extension or setup screen is needed. It’s currently in preview, but it’s enabled by default in this release.

A workflow you’ll actually keep using
To access native Containers in Firefox, right-click on any tab or long-press the new tab button. These actions will open a menu with the New Tab, Personal, Work, Banking, Shopping, and Manage Containers options. Each of these has distinct icons, a small detail that comes in handy when you are 10 tabs deep. It helps you tell at a glance which container a specific tab belongs to.
Clicking the Manage Containers option takes you to the container settings, where you can edit container names, delete containers, or add new ones. When I set up my containers, Work held my work-related accounts while I let Personal handle other things that I wanted to stay logged in to. Banking remained isolated on purpose, and I contained all retailer tracking cookies in Shopping so that they live and die in that space without spamming me every other place I go.
Even opening a link within a container ensures that the new tab remains in that container. This bit surprised me because I had not noticed it in the documentation. Firefox’s implementation of Containers, once configured, largely stays out of your way. Other tabs that are not part of a container work as they always have; this feature doesn’t affect any other part of your setup or browsing experience.
Native Containers still miss a few useful features
Where the extension still has the edge
I wouldn’t recommend that anyone running Multi-Account Containers uninstall it yet. This native implementation is still in preview, and the extension still does a bit more than the built-in implementation.
Automatic site assignment is the biggest difference you will notice. With the extension, there is an “Always open this site in this container” option. This isn’t available in this preview yet. The native implementation also doesn’t include cross-device sync and VPN or proxy pairing at the moment.
There is, however, an important point to note while using Containers. They don’t act as a blanket privacy cloak. Containers isolate cookies and site storage but don’t hide your IP address or prevent fingerprinting; they complement — rather than replace — Enhanced Tracking Protection, Private Browsing, or a VPN.

The people who need this most would never have installed it
I have been using Firefox’s extension version of Containers since 2022, even though it’s been on Firefox’s add-on store since 2017. I am not an exception. Most people who would have benefited from an extension like this never touch it because it takes extra effort to find and trust an extension. As a native inclusion, Firefox has removed much of that friction. It’s much easier to notice a colored tab that hasn’t always been there.
The goal isn’t to give you anonymity, but it does mean you won’t mix up accounts as much. Having a cleaner split between the different corners of my online life is worth it, and Firefox is one of the few browsers that provides such a fluid native implementation. I still love and use Brave a lot, but for many, native containers may be enough to make the switch away from Chromium-based browsers.
