Two DeWalt drills can sit side by side in the same aisle, wear the same 20V MAX badge, and behave like different tools under load. The motor isn’t the variable. The pack clipped to the bottom is. Certain tools in the 20V MAX lineup identify the battery the instant it seats and set their power ceiling accordingly, holding back until a qualifying pack shows up. DeWalt has renamed that capability twice since 2024, so the badges that used to advertise it have quietly left the shelf. What follows is how the handshake works, how to tell whether the tools and batteries already in your garage are a matched set, and which pack is worth the money if they aren’t.
The handshake that happens the moment a pack clicks in
Every 20V MAX battery physically fits every 20V MAX tool, and that has never stopped being true. What changed is what happens after the pack seats. Tools built with this capability recognize which type of battery is attached and automatically adjust how much current they draw. A standard pack gets you the baseline. A higher-output pack gets the same motor permission to pull considerably harder.
None of that is voltage sleight of hand. The additional output comes from revised control boards, updated software, and motors built with more copper, larger magnets, and repositioned rotors. FlexVolt packs run on a related idea, rewiring themselves in series for 60V or in parallel for 20V based on what the tool tells them. The tool asks, the pack answers, and the ceiling moves.

When this technology launched, DeWalt published gains that were hard to ignore. The hammer drill claimed 42% more power, the reciprocating saw 50%, the angle grinder 54%, and the circular saw 77%. Those figures came from testing a 6Ah FlexVolt pack against a 5Ah standard battery.
Read the asterisks before you get excited. DeWalt’s own footnotes specify that the 50% power claims are measured against a comparable older pack and are not in application, which means bench conditions rather than the hole you’re actually drilling. Independent testing lands somewhere more modest. The 5Ah pouch pack performed roughly on par with the 8Ah tabless pack across most tools, with the 8Ah pulling ahead only in the most demanding continuous work, while the compact pouch battery came in slightly below a standard cylindrical 5Ah.
The names that identified this feature no longer exist
Two rebrands in under two years
DeWalt used to label all of this. FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE went on tools that woke up for a 60V pack, and XR POWER DETECT went on tools that responded to high-output 20V packs. In June 2024, both of those names were folded into a single XR designation. XR stopped meaning extended runtime and started signaling power delivery potential instead.
Then it happened again. In April 2026, the PowerStack and PowerPack names disappeared from DeWalt’s product pages entirely, leaving the compact pouch battery listed as nothing more descriptive than an XR compact battery. The practical fallout is real. The older 8Ah pack wears yellow and black housing while the newer, stronger 8Ah wears yellow and grey, and both sit on shelves at the same time. Milwaukee created a similar problem from a different direction when it broke the amp-hour shorthand buyers had relied on for a decade.
Three things worth confirming before you spend anything
Start with the tool housing. XR branding on a current model is the signal that a higher power tier exists at all, and tools without it run one way regardless of what you clip on. Next, look up the model number on DeWalt’s site rather than trusting the box art, since kits pair identical bare tools with wildly different packs.
Finally, identify batteries by model number instead of capacity or color. Amp-hours describe how long a pack lasts, not how hard it pushes, and the two 8Ah packs prove those can diverge. The trap catches people who buy the tool and skip the pack. A boost-capable tool is no more powerful than an ordinary one until a qualifying battery joins the collection. If you’re crossing platforms, cheap adapters will physically bridge the gap, though they won’t trigger anything.
Which pack unlocks it, and when it isn’t worth buying
Match the battery to the work, not to the spec sheet
The 5Ah XR pack is the sensible default at roughly $149, and it delivers most of what the tier offers without the bulk. The 8Ah tabless pack runs closer to $229 and earns that premium only under sustained heavy draw. A standard 5Ah sits around $129 by comparison, which makes the upgrade look like a small stretch. FlexVolt packs start near $199 and make sense if 60V tools are already in play or coming.
Skip all of it if you drive screws and drill pilot holes. Buying a premium pack to unlock headroom you never reach is the same mistake as overbuying capacity on any other platform.

The cheapest upgrade in your kit is the one you clip on
Replacing a tool costs a few hundred dollars. Changing the pack on a tool you already own costs a fraction of that and can move it into a performance tier it was built for but never reached. The catch is that DeWalt has stripped away the shorthand that used to make this obvious at the register, and there’s no guarantee the current naming survives the next product cycle. Keep model numbers on your phone, check them before you buy, and let the tool’s own electronics do the rest of the work.
