I didn’t know USB port colors meant something — now I plug devices into the right one every time

The concept of USB was to create a standardized, universal connector for powering and connecting electronic devices, but the implementation is far from that. Take USB-A, for instance: It spans several standards with different speeds, yet virtually every port looks similar.

Despite USB-C becoming the new standard, USB-A ports are a constant. And even while these ports have been around for decades, you still have to choose the right port. That’s where USB color-coding comes in.

What USB-A port colors tell you

Four colors, four different generations

Type-A USB, which started the legacy of these connectors, has remained active for 30 years now, first debuting in 1996 with USB 1.0, which is color-coded white. USB 1.0 had a speed between 1.5Mbps and 12Mbps, which, at the time, was a lot of bandwidth. However, it had limitations, as the data transfer was slow and could deliver only 2.5W/5V at 500 mA, making it suitable for peripherals or modems.

Introduced in 2000, USB 2.0, colored black, delivered a significant bandwidth increase to 480 Mbps. This was a huge jump over the original, but the power output remained the same. USB 2.0 was fast enough to support external disc drives, flash drives, printers, and network adapters.

In 2008, the blue USB 3.0 debuted and remains quite common nearly two decades later, being the biggest advancement in USB-A to date. The data transfer limit jumped to a whopping 5Gbps, making it capable of handling external SSDs, USB hubs, and high-speed peripherals. Nearly every USB 3.0 port is also compatible with earlier generations, though you may find their speeds capped.

The teal-colored USB 3.1 Gen 2, often referred to as Superspeed+ USB, introduced further changes to the USB standard, effectively doubling the data transfer rate to 10Gbps. However, in some cases, USB 3.1 Gen 2 may also be painted red, but that really depends on the manufacturer’s choice.

Here’s where it gets tricky: by modern standards, these now fall under the USB 3.2 specification, with USB 3.0 renamed to USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 3.1 Gen 2 renamed to USB 3.2 Gen 2. However, manufacturers don’t strictly follow a specific guideline and use terms interchangeably.

There are other USB-A colors that don’t specifically represent generations, but rather features. USB-A ports colored yellow or orange feature Always-on charging, meaning you can charge a device even when your system is shut down (assuming it is still connected to a power source). These colored ports are rare and won’t be easy to come across, but if you do, they’re for fast-charging devices. Do note that they can be from either the USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 generation, so data speeds vary accordingly.

While these colors do represent the USB port’s capabilities, they aren’t always definitive. Many manufacturers ditch color coding entirely, and some brands, like ASUS, match the port color to the component’s theme. For instance, if a motherboard is painted red to appeal to gamers, all USB ports will be red too. However, that doesn’t mean that all the USB ports are USB 3.1 Gen 2. In that case, I highly recommend looking up your motherboard/laptop’s manual and checking which port supports what. Earlier generations, USB 1.0 and USB 2.0, are outdated, though USB 2.0 is still surprisingly prevalent to date.

If you want a foolproof way to differentiate between generations, USB 1.0/2.0 had 4-pin connectors, while USB 3.0 has 9-pin connectors.

Picking the right port for the right job

Once you find out which port supports which speeds, it’s important to use them accordingly. Older generations are best suited for peripherals since they don’t demand much bandwidth, but always reserve USB 3.0 and above ports for external drives or any hardware that requires large amounts of data to be transferred. As a rule of thumb, the fastest USB-A ports are typically placed on the back of a desktop PC where the motherboard IO is, and on laptops, they’re placed next to Thunderbolt or USB-C connectors, since they might share the same high-speed controller. Nevertheless, it’s always important to check your manual for a detailed overview.
