There’s something oddly frustrating about searching for someone’s Instagram account, only to realize it’s nowhere to be found. Did they delete their account? Are they taking a break from social media? Or, worse, did they block you? Naturally, Instagram doesn’t exactly make it easy to figure out which one it is.
If you’re anything like me, that’s usually enough to send you down a rabbit hole of jumping to the worst possible conclusion and mentally replaying every conversation you’ve had with that person over the past five years, trying to figure out what you could’ve possibly done wrong.
Thankfully, there are a few ways to figure out what might’ve actually happened before convincing yourself you’ve somehow offended them.
Instagram actually has a way to check for deactivated accounts
Your followers list is the first place I’d check
Despite this feature being around since 2024, it’s one that I wouldn’t be surprised if most Instagram users didn’t even know existed. Instagram actually has a built-in way to check which of your followers have deactivated their accounts, and it’s easily the first place I’d look if someone’s profile suddenly disappeared.
The only catch is that the person needs to follow you, not the other way around. So, if you suspect someone who follows you has deactivated their account, this is one of the easiest ways to find out. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open Instagram and head to your profile by tapping your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Followers at the top of your profile.
- Look for the Deactivated accounts category and tap it.
- Scroll through the list to see if the person you’re looking for appears.
If their account appears on this list, that’s a pretty good indication that they’ve temporarily deactivated it rather than permanently deleted it.
Interestingly, though, I’ve noticed that the Deactivated accounts category doesn’t always appear on every Instagram account. I can see it on two of my accounts, but it’s completely missing from another. One of the accounts it appears on is private, while the other is public, so it clearly isn’t tied to your account’s privacy settings.
If you don’t see the option, don’t immediately assume the person hasn’t deactivated their account. You can still try one of the other methods below.
The next best thing is to search for their account
Another Instagram account can help you rule out being blocked
If the person you’re looking for doesn’t follow you, the easiest place to start is Instagram’s search feature. Simply tap the Search icon at the bottom of the screen, enter their name or username, and see if their profile appears.
If it doesn’t, there are a few possible explanations. They could’ve deactivated or deleted their account, changed their username, or blocked you.
Now, before you start overthinking every interaction you’ve ever had with them, there’s a fairly simple way to rule out that last possibility: search for their profile from another Instagram account.
When someone deactivates or deletes their account, their profile becomes inaccessible to everyone on Instagram. So, if you can’t find their account from another profile either, there’s a good chance they’ve deactivated or deleted it. Of course, they could’ve also changed their username or had their account disabled by Instagram.
On the other hand, if their profile shows up normally on another account but not yours, that’s a strong indication that you’ve (unfortunately) been blocked.
Your Instagram DMs can offer a few more clues
Old conversations might tell you more than you think
Instagram Direct Messages can be a lifesaver when you’re trying to figure out if someone has deactivated or deleted their account. This method will only work, however, if you’ve previously DMed the account in question and haven’t deleted the conversation.
You can check for a deactivated or deleted account by tapping the home icon at the bottom of the screen, and then tapping the Messages icon in the top right corner of your screen. Begin by tapping the Search bar and typing their Name or Username. If that doesn’t help, try searching for keywords you might have used in your conversations.
For instance, if you remember talking about cats, try searching “cats.” Once you find the conversation, take a look at how their account appears. In many cases, deactivated accounts show up as “Instagram User” instead of their original username.
Sometimes, their username might still appear, but tapping their profile won’t load any information, including their posts, followers, or following list. One strange thing I’ve noticed while testing this is that a deactivated account’s profile picture can sometimes be replaced with my own.
However, seeing “Instagram User” doesn’t necessarily confirm that someone’s temporarily deactivated their account. Deleted or disabled accounts can appear this way, too.
Interestingly, I’ve also noticed that some deleted accounts appear as “__deleted__” followed by a string of random letters in my DMs.
If you come across one of these, try opening the conversation to see if you recognize your previous messages with that person.
You can also try looking them up without logging in
Your web browser might help clear things up
If the methods above haven’t given you a clear answer, there’s one more thing worth trying: looking up their Instagram profile through a web browser without logging into your account.
To do this, open your preferred browser and switch to a Private or Incognito window. Then, type instagram.com/username into the address bar, replacing “username” with the exact username of the person you’re looking for.
If their account is still active and they’ve simply blocked you, you may be able to see their profile while logged out. Instagram might also prompt you to sign up or log in to view more of their content.
However, if they’ve deactivated or deleted their account, you’ll typically see a message saying “Sorry, this page isn’t available.” Keep in mind that this can also happen if they’ve changed their username or you’ve entered it incorrectly!
There’s another catch, though. Instagram sometimes limits what you can see without logging in, so a profile failing to load doesn’t necessarily mean the account has been deactivated or deleted.
Ultimately, while these methods can help you narrow down the possibilities, there’s no guaranteed way to distinguish a temporarily deactivated account from one that’s been permanently deleted. If you know the person outside Instagram and none of these methods have helped, the easiest way to find out might just be to ask them directly. Or, well, perhaps you can keep overthinking every interaction you’ve ever had with them and convince yourself you’ve somehow offended them. I won’t judge!
