Every Windows title bar should have come with this hidden menu

If you right-click a conventional Windows title bar, you uncover a menu that seems preserved in amber. It can move, resize, minimize, maximize, or close the window, but those commands rarely solve the small window problems that interrupt actual work.

SmartSystemMenu fills that neglected corner with controls Windows arguably should have supplied itself. After using it across File Explorer, creative software, browser windows, Command Prompt, and small utility panels, I started treating the title bar as the logical place to control the window attached to it.

Like other Windows apps that run without installation, SmartSystemMenu only asks you to extract its archive and launch the executable. I downloaded the official ZIP archive directly from the project’s GitHub repository, extracted the folder, and ran the portable executable.

SmartSystemMenu triggers a User Account Control prompt when it starts, which is expected. It runs separate components for 32-bit and 64-bit processes, loading system-wide hooks that add commands to the system menus of compatible windows. That behavior is legitimate, though any tool that requests elevation and interacts this closely with other processes should come only from the official repository or a trusted package manager.

Once running in the system tray, revealing the new controls is as simple as right-clicking any standard title bar or pressing Alt + Space. The initial menu can feel overwhelming, as it resembles a diner that refuses to retire any dish. Thankfully, the settings dialog lets you reorganize and trim the list.

I hid the developer-focused Information entry and disabled the obsolete Aero Glass options. On my display, I encountered one of the Windows scaling issues that can affect high-DPI screens, with some settings checkboxes disappearing. Temporarily disabling high-DPI support, restarting the app to make my changes, and then re-enabling it resolved the issue.

Pin it, fade it, fold it, or move it out of the way

A window-management utility only earns its place if it makes everyday work faster, and SmartSystemMenu proved most useful for keeping reference material visible. Always On Top quickly became one of my most-used commands. Microsoft PowerToys can also keep apps always on top, but SmartSystemMenu places the control directly inside the menu of the window it affects.

Instead of splitting the screen to keep a reference image visible while working in LosslessCut, I could pin the image viewer above the editing timeline. I used the same approach while researching articles, keeping a browser window above my Notion workspace so I could scroll through a source without repeatedly switching between apps.

For Windows, I only needed Roll Up occasionally; it collapsed everything except the title bar. That made it easy to keep a file-transfer dialog nearby without letting it cover the underlying application. Some modern apps with heavily customized interfaces do not respond properly to the command, but it worked well with conventional Windows apps.

Windows 11’s Snap Layouts already divide the display into useful preset arrangements, while SmartSystemMenu gives me finer control over individual windows. Using Resize and Alignment, I created an 800 × 600 preset for File Explorer and assigned keyboard shortcuts to move windows directly to the top-left corner or the center of the display. Once those shortcuts were configured, I could rebuild a familiar workspace without carefully dragging and resizing every window.

SmartSystemMenu also helps when a useful window keeps getting in the way. During focused work sessions, I leave a timer visible above my video editor, reduce its opacity using Transparency, and enable Click Through so that mouse input passes throughto the application underneath. The result works beautifully until I need to interact with the timer again, at which point Click Through has to be disabled. When the surrounding windows become a distraction, Dimmer darkens everything except the active application, giving the workspace an instant sense of hierarchy.

It also hides several practical commands beneath its more noticeable visual controls. Open File in Explorer is handy when I need to find the executable behind a running program. I also use Save to have Windows remember a window’s size and position without installing a separate utility for that single purpose. It worked well with conventional programs such as Command Prompt, although applications with unusual or changing window identifiers may not restore as reliably.

Despite its name, SmartSystemMenu does not work with every window. Applications with custom-drawn title bars, protected Windows components, and processes running with stronger security protections may ignore the added menu entirely. I would also exclude multiplayer games and other software protected by anti-cheat systems, since there is little reason to allow a hook-based window utility to interact with those processes and potentially cause compatibility issues.

The developer provides a Process Exclusions list for troublesome applications. If a program behaves unpredictably with SmartSystemMenu enabled, adding its executable to that list prevents the utility from interacting with it. I would also test commands such as Click Through, Hide For Alt + Tab, and System Tray on an unimportant window first, since applications with unconventional interfaces may not restore as expected.

Windows had the right menu and almost none of the right commands

After experimenting with the complete menu, I disabled process-priority controls, icon changes, and several other commands I was unlikely to use. Always On Top, Roll Up, resizing, alignment, and the visibility controls were useful enough to keep. SmartSystemMenu’s elevated hooks and occasional compatibility problems mean it works best after careful configuration, but it finally gives Windows’ decades-old system menu a reason to exist.
