I’ve got smart dimmer switches in my home office, my gym, the kitchen, and most of my basement, and in three years not one has failed to turn on. That reliability is why I lean on smart switches instead of smart bulbs. But those switches work partly because of when my house was built. Move one onto an older wall and it might do nothing.
The problem isn’t the switch or your Wi-Fi. It’s a single wire sitting behind the switch plate, one that roughly half of American homes never had run to the box. It’s called the neutral, and without it, that expensive switch has no way to power itself on.
Why a smart switch needs a wire a regular switch never did
The neutral keeps the switch powered even when the light is off
A standard light switch has one job. Flip it and the hot wire connects, sending power to the bulb. Flip it back and the circuit breaks. The switch never draws a drop of power for itself; it just sits on the wall and waits.
A smart switch is different. Tucked inside is a radio for Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave, plus the electronics that listen for commands and remember whether the light is on. That gear sips power nonstop, even at 2 a.m. with the lights long dark. Feeding it takes a full circuit: hot to bring current in, and a neutral to send it back to the panel. The neutral is that return path. Take it away and the switch has no way to keep its brain running while the light is off, so it either won’t work at all or won’t work reliably.

Switch loops left older boxes with no neutral at all
For decades, electricians wired switches the cheapest way that did the job. Power ran to the light fixture first, and a simple two-wire cable dropped down to the switch to break the circuit. That method is called a switch loop, and it leaves only two wires in the box: the hot feed and the switched hot heading back up to the light. No neutral, because nothing at the switch ever asked for one.
The 2011 National Electrical Code changed that, requiring a neutral at most switch boxes going forward. Timing is the whole story here, because a lot of American housing predates it. Census figures back that up. As of the 2024 American Community Survey, the median owner-occupied home in the country is 42 years old, which puts about half of all houses in the early 1980s or before. Anything built ahead of the mid-1980s rarely carries a neutral at the switch. Decades of age on your house, then, mean a solid chance those boxes still run on the old two-wire method.
How to tell if your box has a neutral
Cut the power, then look for a bundle of white wires
Guessing isn’t necessary. Head to your electrical panel, kill the breaker for that circuit, and prove the power is off with a non-contact voltage tester before a finger goes near a wire. With the box safe, take off the cover plate and ease the switch forward.
Now study the wires. A bundle of white wires twisted together under a wire nut toward the back of the box is your neutral, and most smart switches will connect right up. If all you find is black wires and a bare copper ground, you’ve got a switch loop with no neutral to spare. That empty-handed moment, where you’ve already bought the switch and realize it has nowhere to land, is the same headache behind a smart home that quietly annoys your guests when a wall switch does nothing. If the wiring looks ambiguous, or you’d rather not poke around a box at all, stop and call an electrician. There’s no shame in paying a pro to handle the part with live wires in it.
What to do when the neutral isn’t there
Buy a no-neutral switch
A missing neutral doesn’t kill your smart lighting plans
The first is a switch built for the problem. No-neutral smart switches pull a tiny trickle of current through the light circuit to stay awake, so they don’t need a return wire. Start with the Lutron Caséta dimmer, which has held the top spot for years. Instead of Wi-Fi, it uses its own radio band, and it dims almost any compatible bulb without the flicker that plagues cheaper switches.
The catch is the bridge. You need Lutron’s hub for the switch to reach Alexa or Google Home, which puts you around $60 for the switch and $80 for the bridge. To skip a hub altogether, look at the GE Cync smart switch. It joins Wi-Fi on its own and ships with a bypass capacitor, the little part that keeps low-wattage LEDs from glowing when they should sit dark.
Run a wire, or skip the switch
Two more ways around it
That flicker is the main gotcha with no-neutral switches, so it pays to check a brand’s bulb compatibility list before you buy a dozen.
The second option is to add the wire. An electrician can run a neutral to the box, usually by pulling the old two-wire cable and replacing it with a three-wire one. It’s the most durable fix and it opens the box up to any switch you like, but you’re paying for labor and maybe a little drywall patching.
The third route skips the switch entirely. Leave the wall switch on full time and control the bulb instead. That’s where I’ve landed for years. My Philips Hue smart bulbs stay powered and I run them through the app, a voice command, or an automation, no rewiring involved. A smart plug does the same trick for lamps. If working around your existing wiring appeals to you more than cutting into it, that’s exactly what I did when I made my old doorbell smart without touching the wiring.

Old wiring doesn’t lock you out of a smart home
The neutral wire sets how hard the upgrade will be, not whether you get to do it. A newer build like mine hands you the easy path, where nearly any switch drops right in. An older home just asks you to pick a lane: a no-neutral switch, a short visit from an electrician, or smart bulbs that route around the switch box. All three land you in the same place. Once the hardware is sorted, the good part begins, and a few well-built automations can make the whole house feel a lot smarter.
