The standardization of USB-C across smartphones and even computers was supposed to be convenient, but it isn’t that simple. Manufacturers have rolled out their separate fast-charging technologies, and confusing marketing around these cables doesn’t help either.
USB-C cables also carry an e-marker chip that handles power and data negotiation — its presence is a good sign of whether the cable is good. With all these confusing elements and specifications, one might think that buying expensive cables is better and sufficient.
Still, the reality is far from that, and all you have to do is match specs to your device’s actual wattage.
What determines how fast your phone charges?
Wattage, protocol, and e-marker chips all play a part
Depending on how much wattage your device needs, you may need different types of USB-C cables. Most off-brand USB-C cables provide 10-15W, which is insufficient for any phone today. USB-C cables without an e-marker chip may cap out at 60W, and anything beyond that requires an e-marker chip that signals your devices what the cable can safely handle.
Beyond that, these cables also support fast-charging protocols like USB-C PD (Power Delivery), which help negotiate higher power for bigger, more demanding devices.
One extension of USB-C PD is PPS, a protocol that dynamically adjusts voltage in real time to charge your device efficiently, keep it cool, and maintain healthy battery life. Different phones use different charging protocols: Google Pixel 6 and later and Samsung Galaxy S20 and later use PPS for fast charging, while Oppo phones use their own proprietary SUPERVOOC protocol.
For these protocols, the USB-C cable differs at a physical level: the first factor is the e-marker chip, and the other is the cable’s internal construction at the connector level.

Same phone, two different cables
Ultimately, your phone determines how much power it needs, and a cable’s specifications only matter until they fall short of what your device needs. A mobile phone doesn’t draw much wattage either, and most devices like my Samsung Galaxy S23 require a maximum of 25 watts for charging.
So spending $30 on a USB-C cable for my smartphone without checking the specifications would be absurd.
Regardless, I still bought an expensive USB-C cable with an e-marker chip rated at 100W for $30 to compare it against an off-brand cable I got for $5 off Amazon that is supposed to carry 25W, to see how much difference they’d make in charging.

The only way a 25W cable would underperform is if it fails to deliver the advertised power, which can happen with a poorly made cable that has electrical resistance. For something like the Galaxy S23, a decent-quality 3A USB-C cable is sufficient to deliver its maximum 25W charging speed.
When a pricier cable is actually worth it
Laptops and high-wattage devices need more than a basic cable
An expensive USB-C cable for a job as simple as charging your phone isn’t really a smart decision. However, there are cases where you’d need a top-of-the-line USB-C cable, but that use case rarely comes up.
Even the latest Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra requires a maximum of 60W for charging, and that’s the limit before e-markers become mandatory for USB-C cables, so buying a cable for just a phone shouldn’t cost a pretty penny.
However, laptops that need more juice require a better, more expensive cable that can carry that current. USB-C can carry up to 240W, and of course, not every cable can handle that much power. Again, just match the cable to your device’s requirements, and check the cable’s specifications before you buy.
USB-C can also carry video and audio output, but only with certain cables that require an e-marker chip. However, to get a display, make sure the port supports video and audio output.
Match the specs to your device, not the price
I get that buying USB-C cables is confusing, but that doesn’t mean you should drop loads of money on a 100W cable when your phone only needs 25W. The extra carrying power won’t magically charge your phone better; it’s just overkill.
My $5 off-brand cable worked just as well on my Galaxy S23 as the $30 cable did, because it carries sufficient power.
At higher prices, you’re paying for the brand name, extra power, braided materials, better connectors, and higher data speeds, which all sound nice but might not do much for you.
