Ryobi made a battery promise in 1996 and somehow still hasn’t broken it

Ryobi sold its first 18V cordless drill in 1996, back when the pack inside was nickel-cadmium and the connector was a plain molded rail. Nobody at the company has touched that design since. The batteries I grab at Home Depot today still click into tools built while Bill Clinton was in office, and one of those original packs will still run a brand-new brushless saw.

That stubbornness is part of why Ryobi outperforms its budget reputation. Almost every other cordless brand has abandoned a battery format at some point and left its owners stranded. Ryobi never did, not even when the whole industry walked away from nickel-cadmium for lithium-ion.

What Ryobi actually promised in 1996

The system is called ONE+. The pitch fits in one sentence: every 18V tool Ryobi makes shares a single battery interface, so any pack runs any tool, whether the two were built 30 years apart or came home in the same kit. Ryobi hammers on that 1996 date in its own marketing, and for once the marketing undersells things. One drill turned into a catalog of more than 300 tools, and each new release still locks onto the same mount drawn up in the ’90s.

A slogan wouldn’t survive 30 years of product releases on its own. Hardware had to back it up. The terminal layout and mount geometry on today’s packs still match what Ryobi shipped in the ’90s, so a dusty drill dragged out of a relative’s garage fires right up on a battery stamped with this month’s date code.

Why holding that line was harder than it sounds

The lithium switch should have broken it

A connector is just molded plastic and a few terminals, and those only change if somebody decides to change them. The cells behind those terminals were a different story. The industry moved off nickel-cadmium and onto lithium-ion, a change in how cells are built, protected, and managed. Plenty of manufacturers treated that shift as a clean break. The new chemistry arrived in a new pack with a new shape, and whatever you bought under the old system turned into a paperweight.

Ryobi engineered around the change rather than starting over. Modern lithium ONE+ packs carry their own management electronics but still bolt onto the 1996 rail, so old tools read them fine and new tools read old packs. Not every cordless system behaves this well. Even where batteries appear to fit across brands, the electronics underneath can disagree about which side protects the cells, which is how people cook a pack with a cheap adapter. Ryobi sidestepped that problem inside its own lineup by refusing to move the goalposts.

What the promise looks like in my garage

One pack, a dozen unrelated jobs

On a normal Saturday, a single 4Ah pack might run my oscillating multi-tool while I trim a door casing, jump to the impact driver to drive a handful of lag screws, then finish the afternoon in the spot cleaner working on a stain in the back seat of my 4Runner. None of those tools relate to each other. All of them take the same battery. I never think about it, which is the entire point.

That interchangeability changes how I shop. Once the batteries are handled, a new tool costs only the tool, so adding a capability feels less like an investment and more like an impulse buy. The one that caught me off guard was the 150W power inverter, which turns any pack into a live AC outlet you can lean on during an outage instead of buying a separate power station. It borrows batteries that are already busy with other jobs. None of that works if the packs expire every few years.

Where the promise stops

18V only, and two asterisks

The promise is real, but it only covers the 18V line, and that catches people out. Ryobi also sells a 40V outdoor platform, a smaller USB Lithium range, and, in some regions, a 36V system, and none of them cross over. My 40V leaf blower battery is dead weight on my drill, and my ONE+ packs can’t power the 40V string trimmer. Own both, as I do, and you’re really maintaining two separate battery libraries that happen to wear the same green.

Even within ONE+, a couple of edges are worth knowing. The tall 9Ah pack won’t fit certain tools with watertight covers, so it isn’t perfectly universal. And while Ryobi’s HP tools accept any ONE+ battery, they only reach their rated performance on the newer high-output packs. The interface never moved. What the packs can deliver did.

A promise that pays off at checkout

Torque numbers and combo-kit deals get the attention in the tool aisle, but the smarter question when picking a platform is whether your batteries will still matter in 10 years. Most brands would rather not answer that one. Ryobi can point to a 1996 date it never stopped honoring. Buy a ONE+ pack now, and the odds are strong it’ll still seat into whatever the company sells a decade from now. In a category that loves to make your gear obsolete, a battery that refuses to age out is worth more than its price tag suggests.
