My Dell Latitude 5420 is an all-round laptop, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sure, it’s five years old, but it’s still a great laptop for my work needs. However, the battery health tells a different story.
It only lasts around 2 to 3-ish hours these days, which isn’t surprising for a laptop of its age. Besides, I recently checked the battery report and found out that it can now only hold a full charge capacity of 21,052 mWh, which is about 66.6% lower than its designed capacity of 63,004 mWh.
I’ve done some things to get the most out of my laptop’s battery, but I figured tracking the battery degradation more closely would help me understand how it’s actually holding up. So, what did I do? I started using a free tool called BatteryInfoView.
But it’s static, and checking it repeatedly gets tedious
Windows already has a built-in battery report tool, and it’s actually pretty useful if you want to get an overview of your battery’s health. You can generate one by opening Command Prompt as an administrator and running the powercfg /batteryreport command. Windows will then create a battery report containing information such as your battery’s design capacity, full charge capacity, recent usage, and battery history.
The problem is that the report is static. If I want to keep a closer eye on my battery, I have to keep entering the same command whenever I want an updated report. And it’s not like the report appears directly inside the Command Prompt window either.
Windows saves the report as an HTML file in a folder, usually within your user profile. So every time I want to check the latest battery information, I have to generate the report, find the file, open it in my browser, and go through the information again. I did that a couple of times, and it started to feel a bit stressful.

This is where BatteryInfoView shines and pretty much the entire reason for its existence. Instead of generating a new report every time I want to check my battery, the tool continuously monitors it and logs the information directly inside the app.
It records things like the event time, power state, capacity percentage, capacity value, and voltage, giving me a much clearer picture of what’s happening to the battery throughout the day.
By default, BatteryInfoView records the battery information every 30 seconds, but you can change the logging interval to whatever you prefer. If you want the readings more frequently, just click F9 to open the Advanced Options, then reduce the interval (or increase it if you don’t need that much data).
I like that everything stays in the same interface. BatteryInfoView just keeps collecting the information in the background, and I can look through the log whenever I want. That makes it much easier to spot patterns that a single battery report might not show.

Monitoring my battery in real time has changed the way I think about charging my laptop. Before using BatteryInfoView, I mostly looked at the battery percentage and charged whenever it got low. I knew my battery had degraded, but I didn’t have a convenient way to see how its capacity and voltage behaved throughout normal use.
Now everything changes when I can actually watch what’s happening. For instance, I can see how quickly the battery percentage drops during my normal workload and how the reported capacity changes as I use the laptop. Over time, that gives me a better idea of whether my battery is degrading gradually or whether something unusual is happening.
It also makes me more conscious of how often I keep the laptop plugged in and how I use it when I’m working away from the charger.
I now have a better idea of what my battery is actually doing
At no point did BatteryInfoView improve my battery health. But that’s not really what I was expecting it to do. What it has given me is visibility. I’m not expecting a five-year-old laptop battery to suddenly behave like a new one.
At this point, degradation is inevitable. But knowing exactly how much capacity I’ve lost makes me more interested in preserving what’s left instead of simply accepting shorter battery life. I don’t have to guess whether my battery is getting worse or whether a particular charging habit is affecting it. I can keep an eye on the numbers, identify patterns, and make adjustments accordingly.
