Why Apple shelved one of its most promising upcoming TV shows, but it’s finally getting a release in 2027

Apple TV may not be as popular as some of the other major streaming services out there, but it has a seat at the table thanks to its great collection of original content. Between dramas like The Morning Show and Slow Horses, comedies like Ted Lasso and The Studio, and genre shows like Severance and Pluribus, Apple TV punches well above its weight.

Knowing all of that, there was reason to be excited when Apple announced a new drama called The Savant. It was delayed under very sensitive circumstances, but is finally coming back round.

What is The Savant?

Based on a true, 21st century story

The Savant stars Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, The Help) as Jodi Goodwin, a wife and mother who has a unique job: working for an organization called the Anti-Hate Alliance, she spends time on the internet trying to infiltrate groups of extremists planning potential attacks within the United States.

The show is based on a 2019 Cosmopolitan article called, “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” The article profiles an actual woman nicknamed “the savant” who worked for the Anti-Defamation League. Like Jodi, she infiltrated hate groups online with the aim of stopping them before they could carry out whatever attacks they were planning.

The dramatic possibilities are obvious, and you can see the trailer exploring a lot of them. Might the hate groups target Jodi and her family? How does Jodi manage to hold onto her sanity as she forces herself to identify with violent extremists as she tries to win their trust?

This scenario also addresses potentially touchy real-world topics; if you live in the United States, you’ve likely grown used to hearing reports of mass shootings, and political violence is on the rise. And it’s presumably this aspect of the show that got it postponed.

Why was The Savant delayed?

And is it destined to be a culture war flashpoint?

On September 10, 2025, right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk was assassinated while giving a talk on a college campus. Originally, the first two episodes of The Savant were supposed to premiere on Apple TV less than two weeks later, on September 26, with the remaining six episodes airing once per week through November 7. Three days before the premiere day, Apple pulled the show off its schedule. It was not given a new date, and some people assumed that the series had been axed.

We should note that Apple has never given an official explanation for its reason to delay The Savant, but given that the show is about extremist violence, it seems reasonable to assume it was related to Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Nor is this the first time that TV episodes have been delayed following a tragic event. In 2015, the Season 1 finale of Mr. Robot was delayed because it contained a scene of violence that resembled a real-life shooting that happened in Virginia earlier that day. Friends scrambled to reshoot a scene involving a joke about airport security after the events of September 11, 2001, and an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer about a school shooting was delayed in 1999 after the Columbine High School shootings.

So this kind of thing has happened before. At the moment, The Savant is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV in the spring of 2027, although there is no firm date set yet. Although the show avoided controversy at the time, it may still encounter some when it finally airs.

Even before getting delayed, The Savant was already attracting attention, and not necessarily the kind Apple wanted. The trailer, which went up in August 2025, has 12,000 likes compared to 70,000 dislikes on YouTube, a strikingly lopsided total. A lot of the comments attack the show for looking silly and unrealistic, which is a little surprising since it’s based on real events. Many mock the idea that hate groups online are something worth taking seriously, or that the show’s apparent focus on right-wing extremism is evidence of political bias on Apple’s part. But the data does bear out that, when it comes to home-grown terrorism, right-wing extremist violence is especially widespread, so that aggression seems misplaced.

In short, it feels like some people are prepared to attack this show because it seems to challenge their politics, and that would have been true whether or not it ever got delayed. Assuming the show maintains a high profile, that firestorm could well start up again in 2027.

Will The Savant be any good?

None of this touches on the question of whether The Savant is a good TV show, which no one can know until they see it for themselves. Apple is going to give people the chance. Whether that’s a wise decision, we’ll see in the spring.
