Walk down the networking aisle and Cat8 begs to be picked. The box promises 40 gigabits per second at 2000 MHz, the highest number on the shelf, wrapped in heavy shielding that feels like it means business. I get the pull, because more has to be better, right? Not here. I ran Cat6 through our ranch’s basement during the build, drop by drop, and when a run doesn’t match a factory cable, I still cut and terminate my own.
That hands-on time taught me something the box won’t: Cat8 was never designed for a house. Before you spend extra on a cable that can’t help your setup, it helps to understand why the category stamped on the jacket matters at all. Here’s what Cat8 really does, why your home can’t use it, and the cable I’d buy instead.
What Cat8 actually is, and who it’s for
Built for data centers, not living rooms
Cat8 is a real leap on paper. On paper, it runs 25 or 40 gigabit Ethernet at 2000 MHz, four times what Cat6a manages. That speed comes with a short leash. You only get it within about 30 meters, or 98 feet. Past that, the numbers fall apart. Every legitimate Cat8 cable is also fully shielded, with foil around each twisted pair and another shield wrapping the bundle. That construction fights the electrical noise packed into a server room.
That short reach is a feature, not a flaw. Cat8 was built to link switches and servers packed into the same rack, where 40-gigabit gear actually needs 40-gigabit cable. Those rooms have gear that can actually saturate the cable, plus technicians who ground the shielding correctly. Your house has none of that. The cable is a precision tool aimed at a problem you don’t have, which is exactly why the spec sheet looks so tempting and means so little at home.
Why Cat8 is the wrong buy for a house
The spec sheet doesn’t match your hardware
Start with the internet coming into your home. No consumer ISP sells a residential plan above 10 gigabits, and most of us live somewhere between 1 and 2.5. Then look at your gear. Most routers, consoles, and laptop network ports don’t move data past a gigabit, and even the priciest home hardware stops at 10. Whatever device is slowest sets the ceiling for the whole connection, so a 40-gigabit cable feeding a 1-gigabit router does nothing for you. You’ve bought headroom no device in the building can reach.
Distance makes it worse. That 30-meter ceiling is shorter than plenty of real runs once a cable snakes from a basement rack up through a wall and across a floor. And the shielding that makes Cat8 special only works when it’s grounded properly at both ends. Left floating, it can add noise instead of blocking it, turning your premium cable into a liability.
The Cat8 tax you pay in labor
Stiffer cable, fussier terminations
Cat8’s price tag is only the first cost. All that shielding and thick copper leave the cable stiff. It resists tight corners and drags when you feed it through a wall cavity or down a conduit. Every run turns into a wrestling match.
Termination is the bigger headache. When I crimped my own Ethernet cables to wire the basement, I was working with unshielded Cat6, and even that rewards patience over speed. Cat8 asks for more. Its shielded design needs special connectors and careful grounding, and getting a clean, certified end takes real precision. A sloppy termination throws away the very performance you paid a premium to get.
So you spend more on the cable, more on connectors, and more of your afternoon wrestling a stiff wire into place. All of it for speeds your equipment will never touch. That math never works out in a home.
The cable your home actually needs
Cat6a for new runs, Cat6 for value
For most homes today, I’d buy Cat6a. It carries a full 10 gigabits across the whole 100-meter run, while Cat6 only manages that over shorter distances. Bundle several Cat6a cables together in a wall and they resist crosstalk better too. It costs a little more than Cat6 and stays flexible enough to install without a fight. For a fresh in-wall pull meant to last 15 years, that’s the smart, honest version of future-proofing.
Cat6 remains a great value, and it’s the cable I ran through my own walls. Gigabit and 2.5-gigabit are easy for it, and it still reaches 10 gigabits on shorter runs. That’s enough to carry most homes for years. On a tighter budget with no plans past gigabit, Cat5e will serve you fine.
Whatever you pick, the letter printed after the category decides where you can legally run it. Match the rating to the space, buy a bulk spool, and you’ll spend less than a box of Cat8 patch cables while getting a network your house can actually use.
Buy the cable, save the money for a pull path
A bigger category number is not how you protect a home network for the long haul. The cable behind your drywall will outlast several routers, so the real hedge against the future isn’t Cat8’s spec sheet. It’s leaving yourself a way to swap cables later. When I finished the basement, the smartest thing I did was run conduit so I could feed a new cable through later without opening a wall. Buy Cat6a or Cat6, skip the Cat8 tax, and put the savings toward an empty tube or two. That’s the upgrade your future self will thank you for.
