I walked around a Best Buy a few days ago and looked at hard drive prices, specifically internal ones. Although I have read repeatedly that storage prices have skyrocketed, I had no idea how bad the situation was. It’s bad.
If you’ve shopped for a hard drive recently and walked away confused, you’re not imagining things. Hard drive pricing has stopped following any pattern a regular buyer can predict, and if you’re shopping for network-attached storage specifically, that chaos can lead you toward the wrong drive just as easily as the wrong price.
Why hard drive prices are all over the place
AI data centers are eating the world’s storage supply
The short version: The increasingly controversial AI data centers bought up most of the world’s hard drive supply. Consumer buyers are fighting over what’s left.
According to a Techfuel report, hard drive prices have risen roughly 46% to 50% since September 2025 as data center operators lock in high-capacity drives on long-term contracts, according to multiple industry trackers. Western Digital says it’s sold out of nearline hard drive capacity through calendar 2026, and some of its supply agreements run into 2027 and 2028. Seagate, meanwhile, isn’t expected to take new orders for its enterprise drives until the first half of 2027.
None of that is a temporary blip. Analysts quoted in several of these reports don’t expect prices to normalize before late 2027, so the old advice to wait a few months and it’ll come down doesn’t apply right now.
What that means for you as a shopper is that prices on the same drive can swing by dozens of dollars week to week, listing to listing, and even seller to seller on the same Amazon page. Don’t treat any single price you see as “the” price. Treat it as a snapshot.
NAS drives vs. enterprise drives: Which is actually cheaper per terabyte?
I compared five 8TB drives, and the results surprised me
Going in, I expected a clean split: NAS-branded drives (WD Red, Seagate IronWolf) cheaper per terabyte, enterprise drives (Seagate Exos, Toshiba MG, WD Gold) pricier because that’s traditionally how this market has worked. Amazon pricing on 8TB internal drives at the time of writing gave a different story.

IronWolf and Red Plus came out cheapest at $41 and $44 per terabyte, as expected. The other three surprised me. Toshiba MG landed at $46, close enough to the NAS drives that it barely counts as a separate tier. Exos was $50. Then there’s WD Gold at $72 per terabyte, the priciest drive of the five by a wide margin, $31 more per terabyte than IronWolf for the same 8TB capacity. Toshiba, Exos, and Gold all carry the same “enterprise” branding.
The gap between the cheapest and priciest one under that label is bigger than the gap between the cheapest NAS drive and the cheapest enterprise drive.
The takeaway: don’t shop by category label. Shop by the actual $/TB number on the model in front of you, because assuming any given “enterprise” or “NAS” tag tells you where it’ll land on price is a good way to overpay.
The real risk when buying a NAS hard drive: SMR vs. CMR
Why the wrong recording technology can wreck your RAID array
Buying the wrong drive actually has a whole different problem attached to it, and it’s one that folks chasing whatever’s in stock sometimes make. Basically, you could end up with SMR (shingled magnetic recording) drives instead of CMR (conventional magnetic recording) drives, which can cause you a whole world of pain down the road.
SMR drives are fine for cold storage you write to once and rarely touch again. They’re a bad fit for a NAS running in RAID, because SMR’s write performance falls off badly under sustained or random writes, exactly what happens during a RAID rebuild after a drive fails. Put an SMR drive into an array that needs to rebuild, and you’re looking at a rebuild that takes drastically longer than it should, sometimes long enough that a second drive fails before the rebuild finishes. That’s how you lose an entire array, not just one drive.
Each drive in the comparison above is CMR, as I know what I need to buy. But not every drive in every capacity from every brand is guaranteed to be CMR anymore, so check the spec sheet or product listing before you buy!
How to buy a hard drive during the 2026 storage shortage
It’s not impossible to buy a hard drive in 2026, but I can’t lie: it’s definitely tricky. I have a few key tips:
- Compare cost per terabyte across the actual models you’re looking at, not just NAS drives against NAS drives. As the table above shows, an enterprise drive can beat a NAS-branded one on price, or blow way past it, depending on which one.
- Check for CMR before anything else. Most listings say it outright; if one doesn’t, look up the model number before you buy.
- If you need storage now, buy now. Nothing in current reporting points to prices dropping before 2027 at the earliest.
Recertified enterprise drives are worth a look if you’re already running redundancy and backups. You’re trading a manufacturer warranty for a seller’s, and that supply is thinning out too, but the savings can be real. The other consideration is that during times of shortage, you still need redundancy and backups, even if that drive costs way more than it did a year ago.
Because there is a good chance that in another year, it could cost even more.
