I almost bought a $100 mouse until I found these Windows settings

I’d always operated under the assumption that if my mouse felt sluggish, imprecise, or generally annoying to use, the solution was to throw money at the problem. I’ve browsed endless product pages for Logitech MX Masters and Razer Basilisks, convinced that a $100 peripheral with a better sensor, free-spinning scroll wheel, and a pile of programmable buttons was the only way to improve my workflow.

Before buying anything, though, I spent some time digging through Windows’ mouse settings. Microsoft has been solving a decent number of these little frustrations through underused Windows settings that make a PC easier to use for years. Some options live in the modern Settings app, while others are still hiding in the old Mouse Properties window that looks like it has been time-traveling through Windows releases for decades.

A better mouse would still give me better hardware, but these settings made the one already on my desk noticeably nicer to use.

I fixed my scroll wheel before replacing it

This is probably one of the first mouse settings I’d change on a fresh Windows install. I usually have several windows open at once, often with a browser on one monitor and a document, PDF, or another app on the other. Having to click a window before I can scroll through it adds an extra step every time I move between them.

Windows can send scroll input to whichever window the pointer is hovering over, even if that window isn’t currently active. I can keep typing in one app, move the pointer over another window, scroll through it, then carry on with what I was doing without changing focus.

To turn it on:

  • Press Win + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
  • Enable Scroll inactive windows when hovering over them.

I find this especially useful when I’m working across two monitors or referencing one window while typing in another. It also saves me from clicking a link, button, or other control by accident when all I wanted to do was scroll farther down the page.

ClickLock

Dragging files across a large desktop or selecting a long block of text seems easy enough until you have to hold the left mouse button down for several seconds while trying to keep the pointer moving steadily. If the button is a little stiff, it gets annoying quickly, and one small slip can drop a file somewhere you never meant to put it.

ClickLock changes how that works. Hold the mouse button down briefly and Windows locks the drag in place, so you can release the button and keep moving the pointer without losing what you’re dragging or selecting.

To enable it:

  • Press the Windows key, type main.cpl, and press Enter.
  • Open the Buttons tab.
  • Check Turn on ClickLock.
  • Click Settings if you want to change how long you need to hold the mouse button before ClickLock kicks in.
  • Click Apply, then OK.

Once ClickLock is active, another click releases the item or ends the selection. I’ve found it especially useful for moving files between folders, rearranging windows, and selecting large chunks of text because I don’t have to keep pressure on the mouse button for the entire motion.

Snap To

Large monitors are great until a dialog box pops up on the other side of the screen and you have to drag the pointer all the way over just to click OK.

Windows has an old feature called Snap To that can automatically move the pointer to the default button in supported dialog boxes. Depending on the prompt, that might be OK, Apply, Yes, or another default action.

You can turn it on from the same classic Mouse Properties window:

  • Select the Pointer Options tab.
  • Under Snap To, enable Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box.
  • Click Apply.

It won’t work in every app, so you shouldn’t expect the pointer to jump into place for every prompt. When it does work, though, it cuts down on unnecessary cursor travel over the course of a day.

If you tend to remember exactly where you parked the cursor, having Windows relocate it for you can feel a little jarring at first. I’d leave it on for a few days before deciding whether it fits the way you work.

Enhance Pointer Precision

It can fix pointer movement that feels wrong

Enhance Pointer Precision is one of those Windows settings people have argued about for years because the experience changes a lot depending on how you use your mouse.

The setting adds mouse acceleration. Windows doesn’t look only at how far you move the mouse, but also at how quickly you move it. Slow movements stay relatively controlled, while a faster flick can send the pointer much farther across the screen.

You can find it here:

  • Open Main.cpl.
  • Select the Pointer Options tab.
  • Under Motion, enable Enhance pointer precision.
  • Adjust the Select a pointer speed slider if needed.

This won’t fix a bad sensor, worn switches, unreliable wireless performance, or a mouse that simply doesn’t feel comfortable in your hand. What it can do is make a low-sensitivity setup easier to navigate, especially if you’re short on desk space but still need to move across a large display quickly.

Gamers spend plenty of time dialing in mouse sensitivity for FPS games, and many also turn mouse acceleration off because they want a consistent relationship between physical mouse movement and what happens on screen. That same consistency can be useful for regular desktop work too. If your pointer feels floaty or you keep overshooting small targets, try disabling Enhance Pointer Precision and see if that feels better.

Before writing off the hardware, I’d try the setting both ways for a while. Mouse movement is personal enough that a toggle buried in Windows can sometimes fix what initially feels like a hardware problem.

Make the pointer easier to see

My mouse wasn’t lost, but the cursor often was

One of my more ridiculous mouse habits was frantically wiggling it whenever I lost track of the pointer on my dual-monitor setup. A tiny white arrow can disappear pretty easily against a bright webpage, a busy desktop, or several open apps.

Windows 11 gives you a few better options. These pointer controls are part of Windows’ broader collection of accessibility tools, but they’re useful even if you’ve never thought of cursor visibility as an accessibility issue. You can make the pointer larger, switch its style, or give it a custom color so it stands out more clearly against whatever’s on screen.

To change it:

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch.
  • Use the Size slider to make the pointer larger.
  • Choose a different pointer style, or select the custom option and pick a color.

I use a bright turquoise pointer because it’s easy to spot across both displays without making the cursor comically large.

There’s another handy setting tucked away in the older Mouse Properties window. Under Pointer Options, enable Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key. Pressing Ctrl then briefly highlights where the pointer is, which beats thrashing the mouse around the desk until the cursor finally reveals itself.

I didn’t need to replace my mouse after all

I still appreciate a really good mouse. Comfortable ergonomics, better switches, a precise sensor, programmable buttons, and a great scroll wheel can make a real difference, and Windows can’t conjure any of those out of a settings menu.

I’d just been too quick to blame the mouse whenever something felt off. A few of those annoyances turned out to be Windows settings I’d never bothered to touch, and fixing them made the hardware I already owned feel noticeably better.

Turns out there was a lot more mileage left in the mouse already sitting on my desk.
