I locked my router to one clear Wi-Fi channel and stopped fighting interference

My entire workstation is connected to my router through Ethernet, so I barely think about using Wi-Fi. The only time I really depend on Wi-Fi is when I’m watching Netflix in my living room or when friends come over and need internet access. However, every now and then, when I use Wi-Fi, the connection slows down or drops randomly for a few seconds. I always assumed it was because my router was a little too far from my living room, so my go-to fix was switching from the 5GHz band to 2.4GHz.

That made sense in my head. After all, 2.4GHz has better range, while 5GHz is designed for faster speeds over shorter distances. It wasn’t until I looked into it that I realized distance wasn’t the only thing working against my Wi-Fi. Household devices like microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and even neighboring Wi-Fi networks were all competing for the same wireless channel. And funnily enough, the 2.4GHz band I kept switching to is usually the one that suffers the most.

The best way to understand Wi-Fi channels, in my opinion, is to think of your router like a portable radio. Just like a radio tunes in to different stations by selecting a frequency, your router sends and receives data over specific wireless frequencies.

Consumer routers mostly operate on three frequency bands: 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz. But within each of these bands, data isn’t transmitted on one single signal. Instead, each band is split into smaller slices of frequency space called channels.

You can think of these channels as different “stations” within the same band. If too many devices in your area are tuned to the same channel, they end up talking over each other, which leads to congestion, slower speeds, and unstable connections.

This is often the case in crowded environments, like the apartment complex I live in, where many routers and household electronics compete for the same limited set of channels. The issue is more severe if your router is on the 2.4GHz band, since it has far fewer usable, non-overlapping channels than 5GHz and 6GHz. That means there’s a much higher chance your router is effectively “broadcasting on the same station” as several nearby networks, leading to interference and performance issues.

By default, almost every router is set to choose its Wi-Fi channel automatically. In theory, this should work well because the router selects the channel it believes is least congested when it starts up. The problem is that your Wi-Fi environment isn’t static.

Networks around you are constantly changing, so a channel that is perfectly clear when your router first chooses it can quickly become crowded later on. Some routers are better than others at switching channels automatically, but mine rarely change unless I restart it. So, once I manually selected a clear channel, my Wi-Fi connection became more stable.

Obviously, not all Wi-Fi channels are equally good. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be having this discussion at all. The best channel depends on the frequency band you’re using, but a few channels are better because they’re less likely to interfere with each other.

For the 2.4GHz band, channels 1, 6, and 11 are your best options (I chose channel 6 for my router). Although the band has 11 more channels available, most of them overlap. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping channels, so they deliver the most reliable connection and the least interference.

If you’re using the 5GHz band, you have a lot more options. There are around 24 non-overlapping channels available, so congestion is much less of an issue than on 2.4GHz. While you can use any available channel, 36, 40, 44, and 48 are considered the best starting points because they’re less likely to experience interference. Newer routers that support Wi-Fi 6E also offer the 6GHz band. This band has even more non-overlapping channels than the 5GHz band, making interference much less of a concern. Channels 37, 69, 117, 181, and 213 are among the best choices.

Of course, these recommendations aren’t set in stone and the best choice still depends on your region and nearby congestion. That’s why I always recommend checking nearby networks with a Wi-Fi analyzer app before settling on a channel.

The channels your router can use depend on your country, as local governments and regulatory agencies strictly control which frequencies are allowed for Wi-Fi. So, always make sure your router is set to the correct region to stay compliant and ensure you’re only using legally permitted channels.

Change your Wi-Fi channel in a couple of seconds

The option is usually hidden in your router settings

The exact steps depend on your router, but the process is generally very similar.

  1. Open your router’s admin page by entering its IP address into your browser, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  2. Sign in using your router’s administrator details.
  3. Navigate to the Wireless, Wi-Fi, WLAN, or Wireless Settings page.
  4. Find the Channel setting for either the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, or 6GHz band.
  5. Change it from Auto or Automatic to a specific channel.
  6. Save the changes and let your router restart if prompted.

One small router change made my Wi-Fi much more reliable

I still use Ethernet for almost everything, and I probably always will. But now I don’t dread switching to Wi-Fi whenever I move into the living room or have guests over.

Changing my router’s Wi-Fi channel took less than five minutes, yet it solved a problem I’d spent months blaming on distance. If your Wi-Fi randomly slows down or disconnects even though your internet plan is fast enough, your router might simply be competing with too many devices on the same channel.
