I turned Ryobi’s budget tools into workshop staples by swapping in their premium batteries

Several of my Ryobi tools sat unused for most of last year. None of them broke. They quit early, bogged down under load, or felt weak enough that I reached past them for something corded. I chalked that up to the sticker on the box, since I buy the packs and let the tools ride along and never expected much from a $60 tool. Then I started clipping High Performance batteries onto them instead of the compacts that came in the kits. Same tools, same jobs, different outcome. Three of them now live on the bench instead of in a drawer, and the upgrade cost less than replacing any single one of them would have.

Five cells can only hand over so much current

A compact ONE+ pack is one row of five lithium-ion cells. That construction sets a hard ceiling on how much current the pack can deliver at once, and the ceiling has nothing to do with the tool bolted on top of it. Ask for more than five cells can give and voltage sags, the motor slows, and the tool feels cheap. Nothing is broken. The pack ran out of room.

High Performance packs, the teal ones, change two things. The cells are higher output, and Ryobi adds electronics it calls IntelliCell that let the pack and a brushless tool negotiate for roughly 30% more power. Most of my collection is brushed, so those electronics sit idle. The higher-output cells still do their work. That split matters when you decide which ONE+ packs are worth paying for, because a brushed tool collects capacity and current headroom while a brushless tool collects both plus the handshake.

My heat gun stopped dying halfway through a job

Sustained draw punishes a compact faster than a saw does

A saw pulls hard in bursts, with the blade out of the material half the time. A heat gun pulls hard without pause. The element draws current for as long as the trigger is down, which makes the ONE+ heat gun the most demanding thing in my collection despite weighing 1.4 pounds.

Ryobi admits as much in the spec sheet. The tool hits 875°F in under 10 seconds and carries a rating of up to 20 minutes of runtime, and that runtime figure is measured on a 6.0Ah High Performance pack. Ryobi publishes no equivalent number for a 2.0Ah compact. Stripping old paint off trim with one, I got partway through, waited on a charger, and came back to finish. The gun never felt underpowered while it ran. It simply stopped running.

On the 6.0Ah HP pack, that same stretch of trim goes in one sitting. Nothing about the tool changed.

Long cuts are one uninterrupted pull on the pack

My oscillating multi-tool runs up to 20,000 oscillations per minute on a brushed motor, the cheap and durable combination Ryobi uses across most of its budget lineup. Short work suits a compact pack fine. Drywall cutouts, trimming a shim, cutting a stubborn nail, none of those hold the blade in the material long enough to matter.

Grout is a different job entirely. Clearing a run of it means keeping the blade buried for minutes at a stretch with the speed dial near the top, which is one long uninterrupted draw. A compact sags under that. The blade slows, the cut starts to wander, and the natural response is to lean harder, which only makes the sag worse.

A 4.0Ah HP pack holds the speed through the whole pass. The bare tool sits near the bottom of the ONE+ catalog on price, and it went from a drawer tool to the first thing I grab for tile work without costing me another dollar in tools.

The inverter became an actual outlet

With a power source, runtime is the entire product

Every other tool here does work of its own. The 150W power inverter only delivers watt-hours, so the pack underneath is not an accessory. It is the product.

The arithmetic is short. An 18V pack at 2.0Ah stores about 36 watt-hours. At 6.0Ah, roughly 108. Feeding a laptop pulling 45W, that is the gap between about 45 minutes and a little over 2 hours, before conversion losses take their cut.

I bought the inverter for power outages and barely touched it. On a compact it behaved like a novelty, good for a phone top-up and not much else. On a 6.0Ah HP pack it runs a laptop and a charger through an outage long enough to be worth having, and it powers small electronics anywhere on the property without an extension cord. The unit lists at $99 and has landed at $49, which puts it among the cheap Ryobi tools that punch above their price.

Some ceilings are mechanical instead of electrical

Batteries fix one specific problem, so it helps to recognize the tools that have a different one. My HP track saw rocks on its rail, and the wobble shows up on any cut that has to look right. That is a tolerance issue between the shoe and the rail. Every pack I own produces the same slightly wavy edge.

The handheld spot cleaner has its own hard ceiling. It moves 17 CFM of airflow and 17 IOW of suction, and both numbers come from the motor and the housing rather than from what is clipped underneath. A bigger pack buys more minutes at exactly the suction it always had. When a Ryobi tool needs a step up in tier rather than a step up in battery, current has nothing to offer.

The question I ask before I blame the tool

Continuous load points at the battery, mechanical failure points at the tool

The test takes a second. If a tool holds a motor or a heating element under steady load, a High Performance pack will change how it behaves. If it disappoints at something mechanical, cutting straight, pulling suction, or holding a tolerance, the battery was never involved.

That one distinction saved three tools I already owned. HP packs list at $129 for the 4.0Ah and $159 for the 6.0Ah, and both drop to roughly half that often enough to plan around. One pack, moved from tool to tool, is the cheapest upgrade available in the ONE+ system.
