Ring finally fixed the biggest problem with smart locks, and the solution is surprisingly simple

Want to feel like a magician? Ring’s latest smart home innovation is geared toward providing you with a magical feeling, reviving something from the dead with the touch of a dial.

One of the biggest issues with battery-operated devices is the fact that you need to charge them or change out the battery. If you are negligent and don’t stay on top of when they need to be charged, you could find yourself in a sticky situation. So what can you do to prevent this? You can consider buying Ring’s new smart lock.

The Ring Smart Lock is different

It answers the hardest question about a smart lock

Ring is one of the most well-known brands when it comes to smart home devices, especially for security purposes. Its video doorbells and security cameras are some of the most popular options in the United States. With the Ring Smart Lock, the company makes its first foray into locking technology.

The Ring Smart Lock seeks to provide an answer to the problem when a house loses power or a battery runs out. If the power runs out for most smart locks, it is useless. You’re then back to needing to use a key, making it no longer a smart device.

The Ring Smart Lock has a dial that provides a backup system for its power. Essentially, the power backup is built into the smart lock itself. All you need to do to bring it back to life is turn the dial a few times. If the battery has died, the dial helps the backup kick in.

Ring focused on giving the customer “peace of mind knowing your home is secure,” according to Ring founder and chief inventor Jamie Siminoff.

While using the power dial comes in handy when you’re in a pinch, you’re not going to rely on that every time you need to open the door. When you do want to use the smart lock, there are four ways you can go about locking and unlocking it.

There’s a fingerprint reader at the top of the lock that can be used by multiple people to provide swift access to the home. There’s also the traditional route of a backlit keypad where people can punch in a code to unlock the deadbolt lock. There are a number of codes you can provide to others to help them unlock the door. You can also provide certain people with access, but only at certain times. For example, you can set someone to be able to access the house in a certain window, but never again after that. This is ideal for people who have dog walkers, contractors, babysitters, and more who are coming and going at set hours.

You’ll be able to unlock your door or lock it again from the Ring app, which is one of the most comprehensive smart home monitoring apps on the market. As an Amazon Alexa smart home platform user myself, I’m excited about adding another security device to the app.

One of my favorite parts about owning a Ring security system and devices is that I’m able to connect them to my Alexa-enabled devices, like my Echo smart speakers. The Ring Smart Lock can also be controlled via voice commands through Alexa.

Arguably the best part about this smart lock is the fact that you won’t be setting it up on your local Wi-Fi. One of the most frustrating parts of my current setup is that when my internet goes down, my Ring app doesn’t work as well. The Smart Lock will be connected via Amazon Sidewalk, a shared network that is powered by nearby Amazon devices. It uses the devices in your neighborhood as bridges to provide a low-power network to keep those devices running and up to date. This allows for remote locking, status updates, and PIN syncing to occur in real time.

The Ring Smart Lock is supposed to integrate seamlessly

Add this to your Ring security system

Adding the Ring Smart Lock to your smart home means integrating it into your smart ecosystem. It is designed to work with your other Ring devices that you already have.

Whether you’re using motion sensors, contact sensors, floodlight cameras, or any other Ring product, the Smart Lock will connect with them. This lets you control them all with your voice or through the Ring app.

Arguably the best part about this smart lock is the fact that you won’t be setting it up on your local Wi-Fi.

Everything shows up in the Ring activity feed, so when you get notifications that there is a person at your front door from your Ring Video Doorbell, you can also get one saying someone unlocked the smart lock. The lock itself is a single-cylinder deadbolt, making it similar to many smart locks on the market. There is no additional wiring that’s needed.

The Ring Smart Lock eliminates the biggest problem with the devices

The Ring Smart Lock is the latest entry into the smart lock market and Ring’s first device of its kind. It will retail for $249.99 and will be available starting in early 2027. You can opt for black, silver, or brass as a color option.
