In 2026, there aren’t many options when choosing a mobile network in the United States. You have the big three in AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, as well as a bunch of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that use one of those three networks. These major cellular carriers are always offering different prices, features, and promotions to entice subscribers to sign up. But most of us care about two main things: cell coverage and data speed.
That begs the question: which U.S. carrier offers the fastest mobile data speeds in 2026? Verizon held the top spot for years, but recently, a new carrier claimed the crown. Based on objective data from one of the biggest independent speed testing services, we know the current champion — and it isn’t Verizon.

T-Mobile is faster than Verizon
It’s the clear winner in speed tests across the country
Ookla is known for the popular Speedtest app and website, which many of us use regularly to test our cellular and internet speeds. It also makes a Speedtest Connectivity Report that gauges each carrier’s nationwide performance twice per year. The latest report spans July through December of last year, and it gives us quite a bit of information about each carrier’s performance. Ookla calls these “quality of experience” metrics, as they cover more than just speed.
In summary, T-Mobile dominated the competition and claimed the title of best mobile network overall. It also earned the “best 5G network” moniker, according to Ookla’s Speedtest data. The carrier recorded an 81.52 connectivity score overall and a 74.74 5G connectivity score. This score aggregates data from individual metrics, like speed scores, web browsing performance, and video streaming scores.
T-Mobile’s connectivity scores were significantly ahead of the competition. Verizon posted a 76.57 connectivity score overall, and a 71.66 5G connectivity score, slotting in at second place. AT&T came in last among the big three, finishing with a 74.50 connectivity score and a 67.10 5G connectivity score. That means T-Mobile’s 5G connectivity score actually bested AT&T’s overall connectivity score, which is pretty impressive.

And why Verizon or AT&T might be better in your area anyway
The best mobile carrier is the one that performs the strongest in your area. Picking the best carrier nationwide won’t do you much good if you happen to live within one of the few dead zones on its network. That’s what is most impressive about T-Mobile’s performance. It was the fastest cellular carrier in 46 states, according to Ookla’s report. That demonstrates consistency in speed and coverage across the U.S.
In fact, Verizon was the fastest mobile network in only two states: North Dakota and Maine. The other two states not claimed by either T-Mobile or Verizon, Vermont and Nevada, were deemed too close to call. AT&T wasn’t the fastest mobile provider in a single state, which is a terrible result. That leaves T-Mobile as the overwhelming nationwide champion, delivering the fastest speed in all but four U.S. states.
That said, the fact that Verizon claimed the top spot in two states, and two more were too close to call, proves that location is still a major factor in choosing a carrier. Why is T-Mobile so dominant? It could have something to do with its mid-band 5G spectrum. The carrier holds over 250MHz of the mid-band 5G spectrum, which is roughly 100MHz more than AT&T and Verizon.
This allows T-Mobile to offer mid-band 5G connectivity branded as “Ultra Capacity 5G” on the n41 and n25 bands, bringing fast performance to more people across the country. T-Mobile acquired more of the 5G spectrum than its competitors, and that’s part of the reason why it’s the best U.S. carrier today, beating AT&T and Verizon.
Verizon still wins in this key area
It’s the fastest mobile network for video streaming
T-Mobile nearly swept Ookla’s awards in the Speedtest Connectivity Report. Verizon did bring home a victory in one category: 5G video streaming. It earned a 5G video streaming score of 87.16, slightly edging out T-Mobile’s 86.85 score. For what it’s worth, T-Mobile did win the overall video streaming score with an 84.15 result. Verizon lagged behind with an 82.81 overall video streaming score.
Ookla’s data provides a few important takeaways. The winner might be less important than the loser. AT&T wasn’t the fastest carrier in a single state, and didn’t win a single category. It was consistently in third place, falling short of both Verizon and T-Mobile. While T-Mobile is clearly the fastest U.S. carrier today, Verizon isn’t far behind.
