Windows hides more settings than it shows, and this free app lets you expose them

Search “Windows hidden settings” right now on MUO, and you’ll find more than a couple of results. Yeah, Windows hides a lot of its settings for reasons I myself haven’t been able to figure out. You might want to make a minuscule change, only to find yourself going down a rabbit hole in Control Panel. Sometimes, you even have to dig through the Registry Editor to make certain changes to your PC.

The Settings app has made things a bit better since most of the options there are pretty much straightforward. However, it still lacks lots of important settings, and Microsoft is gradually migrating Control Panel options into the Settings app. While we’re hopefully waiting for that migration to complete, I found a free app that puts many of those hidden settings in one place.

Winaero Tweaker puts Windows settings in one place

Winaero Tweaker brings a huge collection of Windows settings into a single window. Basically, those settings that often require you to Google “how to do this on Windows” are what you’ll mostly find in the app.

So, instead of doing that and then jumping between multiple menus and sections just to toggle on a feature, I can browse through the app (or search) and find the option in the blink of an eye. It is more like Control Panel, but way more linear and easier to navigate. The app organizes settings into separate categories, including Appearance, Behavior, Boot and Logon, Desktop and Taskbar, and more. Each of these categories contains related options, so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

For example, the Behavior category has settings like Ads and Unwanted Apps, Automatic Registry Backup, and Disable Driver Updates. Many of the settings have a simple checkbox that you can select to enable or clear to disable it.

Each setting also comes with a description that explains what it does, which is useful when you’re not very sure whether a particular tweak is right for you. Of course, not every option works through a single checkbox. Some tweaks require you to adjust a slider or restart Windows before the change takes effect.

It brings back features Microsoft retired

Restore classic options and customize parts of Windows that Settings doesn’t expose

Aero Lite in Winaero Tweaker app

One of my favorite things about Winaero Tweaker is that it goes beyond the options Microsoft currently exposes in Windows. If you’ve used an older Windows version and miss certain features, you’ll find plenty to explore.

Winaero Tweaker can help you restore familiar elements of the older interface, including the Aero Lite theme from Windows 8. You can also enable the classic context menu, so you won’t have to keep pressing “Show more options” to view it.

Speaking of the context menu, that is one area the app allows you to tweak the most. You can add a whole lot of things to the context menu, like the shutdown button, Bluetooth, the Settings app, Task Manager, Control Panel, default apps, and a whole lot more.

The app also offers ways to bring back certain classic Windows apps. You probably won’t need every tweak it offers, but the sheer number of options makes it worth browsing through the categories.

Recent Changes helps you retrace your tweaks

Recent Changes section in Winaero Tweaker app

Winaero Tweaker has a lot of Windows settings for users to play with, and I love experimenting with several settings at the same time. Due to this, I could easily forget a tweak I made or simply want to revert something. The developers clearly thought of that, so they added a Recent Changes section. As the name suggests, the section lists tweaks you’ve recently applied.

This gives me a place to review what I’ve changed without having to revisit every category and inspect each setting individually. It’s very useful when I’m trying something new and later decide that I prefer the original behavior.

There is one thing worth keeping in mind, though. Recent Changes is a record of tweaks you’ve made through Winaero Tweaker, not a complete history of every change to Windows. Even with that limitation, it’s a helpful feature that makes experimenting with the app feel less intimidating.

Windows offers plenty of settings, but finding them isn’t always easy. Some are buried in Control Panel, others require Registry edits, and a few aren’t exposed through the standard interface at all.

Winaero Tweaker brings many of those options together in one place, organizes them in a more straightforward manner, and explains what each tweak does. So, whether you want to disable some Windows annoyances, restore a familiar feature, or make small changes to the desktop, it gives you a simpler way to do it.
