You don’t have to run Ethernet or settle for powerline; the cable you need is already in the wall

A room with weak Wi-Fi usually earns you one of two suggestions. The first is Ethernet, and that means fishing cable behind drywall and patching the holes you cut. Or buy a powerline kit and accept whatever speed your electrical wiring decides to hand you that day. There’s a third option most people walk right past.

My builder ran coax next to every Ethernet jack on my main floor, and I have never once plugged anything into it. That coax has stayed idle because I ran Cat6 through the basement myself and dropped a jack in every room that mattered. Most people never wired their own house, though, and the coax behind the TV is the closest thing they have to a shortcut. MoCA is what turns that jack into a real wired link, and a MoCA hardware kit runs cheaper than patching a single wall.

What MoCA actually is

MoCA is short for Multimedia over Coax Alliance, the industry group behind the spec. The tech pushes an Ethernet signal down the same coax that used to feed your cable box. The setup is two boxes. One adapter sits by the router, wired into the nearest coax jack with a short patch cable. The other goes wherever you actually need the connection, feeding a TV, console, or desktop through its Ethernet port.

A MoCA 2.5 kit tops out around 2.5 Gbps and keeps latency near 3 milliseconds, plenty for 4K and a competitive match online. A single coax network can hold up to 16 of them, so a two-pack is only the starting point. Nothing asks you to sign in or set up an app. You plug the adapters in, and the coax handles the rest.

Why coax beats the two options people reach for

More reliable than powerline, less work than a rewire

Powerline kits piggyback on the electrical wiring already in your home, which works fine right up until a microwave kicks on or the signal has to cross two circuits and the speed sags. It also runs half-duplex, meaning it can’t push and pull data at the same time, and what you get varies wildly house to house. That wiring was never built to carry a clean data signal. Coax was.

It is shielded, it handles high-frequency signal by design, and it was already run to the exact rooms where people put televisions. Fresh Ethernet still beats both on raw performance, and I will always argue that a wired connection is worth the trouble. The trouble is the catch. Ethernet means opening walls, and most people are not going to do that for one stubborn dead zone. Coax skips the demolition and gets you most of the way there.

What you need to set it up

Adapters sell in pairs because you need one at each end, and a starter kit runs somewhere in the $60–$100 range depending on brand. Before you buy, check two things about your coax. Any splitter in the signal path has to pass the MoCA frequency band, roughly 1125–1675 MHz, so an older TV splitter may need swapping for a MoCA-rated one. You also want a point-of-entry filter installed where the coax enters your house.

That filter keeps your network signal inside your walls instead of leaking out to the shared line, which protects both your speed and your privacy. Since coax runs to the spots where TVs live, and that’s usually where a console or streaming box ends up too, the cable tends to already be there. With everything connected, most kits link up from one button press, the same way WPS joins a gadget to Wi-Fi.

When MoCA is the wrong call

MoCA rides on cable and most fiber coax, but it will not work on a satellite TV setup, since services like DirecTV use the coax band differently. Newer construction is another gap. A lot of builders now skip coax entirely and run Ethernet or nothing, so the jacks simply are not there. And if you are mid-renovation with the walls already open, put the coax idea down and pull Ethernet instead.

In-wall cable outlives every other part of your network, and you will not get a cleaner shot at running it than when the drywall is off. For a finished house you do not want to tear into, though, coax stays the practical middle ground between a cheap Wi-Fi extender and a full rewire.

The jack you’ve been ignoring

The coax outlet you stopped thinking about when you cut cable is still wired to nearly every room in the house. It did not go anywhere. For a dead zone that Wi-Fi cannot reach and that you are not willing to open walls to fix, it is the lowest-effort wired connection available to you.

I ran Ethernet because I was building and could get away with it. Most people inherit a house instead of wiring one, and there is a good chance the faster, steadier connection they have been missing is already sitting behind the television.
