I’ve always used a Samsung phone. After using so many of its phones over the years, from Ultra flagships to foldables, I know the brand inside out. I know what Samsung gets brilliantly right, and I know what makes me roll my eyes. But that’s the thing about sticking with one brand for so long: it starts to feel comfortable and like home. So the idea of switching to something else never really appealed to me. Then this phone launched in the US.

The moment I saw it, I knew I had to try it, and then go right back to Samsung like I always do. That’s how these experiments usually end for me. Except this time, I didn’t.

The phone that broke my Samsung habit

It’s not like Nothing was a brand I’d never heard of. I’d been following it for quite a while, watching every launch. But when the Nothing Phone 4a Pro finally arrived in the US, something about it immediately grabbed my attention. It wasn’t because I was bored with Samsung. If anything, I’m a huge fan of Samsung’s clean, premium-looking designs. The problem is that almost every phone today is chasing that same polished look. However, Nothing was one of the few brands that felt willing to do something different without looking over-the-top.

That became even more obvious the moment I picked up the Phone 4a Pro, but what really sold me was turning it around. The back has Nothing’s signature semi-transparent design, yet it never feels like it. Apart from the camera module and the Glyph interface, the rest of the back stays clean and minimal, which I actually prefer. That restraint makes the design feel more intentional, and it also helps the one standout feature get all the attention it deserves.

The Glyph interface turned out to be far more useful than I ever expected. I usually keep my phone face-down on my desk, so being able to glance at the lights for notifications or check the time without picking it up has become one of the conveniences I now rely on every day. Before using the phone, I genuinely thought it was more of a marketing gimmick than a practical feature. A few days later, I couldn’t imagine the phone without it. And once the novelty of the design wore off, I started appreciating something else I hadn’t expected.

The size surprised me just as much. Coming from Samsung phones, which tend to be a little narrower, the Nothing Phone 4a Pro feels noticeably wider in the hand. It took me a couple of days to adjust, but once I did, I actually started preferring it. The extra width gives the phone a more secure, balanced feel, and typing or browsing feels noticeably more comfortable. That comfortable grip also makes it much easier to appreciate just how smooth the phone feels every time you use it.

The display itself doesn’t try to reinvent what a modern smartphone screen should be, and honestly, it doesn’t need to. The real star is the 144Hz refresh rate. Everything feels incredibly fluid, whether I’m switching between apps, juggling multiple tasks, or spending far too much time doomscrolling through social media. The phone never feels like it’s waiting for me or asking me to slow down. It simply keeps up, making every interaction feel effortless from the moment I unlock it until I put it back in my pocket.

I’m probably not the kind of person who pushes a smartphone to its absolute limits. Most of my day is spent hopping between social media apps, replying to work messages, taking far too many photos, and using the handful of apps I rely on every day. That’s the kind of routine this phone has had to deal with, and honestly, it hasn’t given me a reason to complain.

Performance has been exactly what I want from a daily driver: reliable enough that I don’t have to think about it. Apps open quickly, switching between them feels effortless, and I haven’t run into any overheating or sluggishness during my regular use. The best part is that it gets out of the way and lets me focus on what I’m doing instead of reminding me that it’s not the one I’m used to.

The battery has become one of my favorite things about this phone. It comfortably gets me through an entire day without making me think about charging it. And because my usage isn’t particularly demanding, I’ve often ended up stretching it well into a second day before finally plugging it in.

The honeymoon didn’t end with the design

Great software is much harder to come by

As much as I liked the hardware, it was the software that convinced me to stick around. A phone can look great on the outside, but if the software gets in your way, the excitement wears off pretty quickly. Thankfully, that never happened here.

Nothing’s software feels refreshingly simple. Yes, Nothing has built its own visual identity with transparent design elements and unique animations, but it hasn’t forgotten what matters most: making the phone easy to use. I don’t enjoy software that’s overloaded with features or menus I’ll never touch. I want something that feels clean, predictable, and fast, and that’s exactly what I found here. It reminds me of why I’ve always enjoyed stock Android. Everything is where you’d expect it to be, and nothing feels unnecessarily complicated.

A couple of features have become part of my routine, too. Essential Search gives me a universal search with a quick swipe, so I can find apps, files, contacts, or even solve simple math problems without jumping between different apps. Then there’s Essential Space, which has been handy for keeping track of screenshots, notes, and reminders. Instead of letting those bits of information disappear into my gallery or notes app, which I always tend to forget, it pulls them into one place, making them much easier to find when I actually need them.

In the end, I realized that home isn’t tied to a logo on the back of a phone. It’s about picking up a device every day and knowing it’ll do exactly what you need it to. And for me, that’s exactly what the Nothing Phone 4a Pro has become.
